One Act

“Jerub-Baal son of Joash [Gideon] went back home to live. He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives. His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelech.” Judges 8:29-31 Gideon had routed the Midianites, 300 to 135,000 and upon completing the victory and refusing to be made king of Israel, went home with lots of gold and valuables of the kings he had slain.
He never was a king but began to live like one, taking many wives and even a concubine who lived in Shechem which had an incredibly bad reputation as a city. The act of sleeping with this woman, even though he had many wives that could suffice him, ended up destroying almost all of his family. Abimelech gathered influence and finally control of Shechem. He then, in one day on one stone, brutally murdered sixty-nine of the seventy sons of his father Gideon.
Gideon did lots of things right but this one act had a ripple effect into the next generation. It is hard to tell from our limited knowled…
