What is really valuable in life? We might think it is gold, silver or jewels because that's what is advertised as precious and enduring but step back and consider other important and valuable things in life.
Our families are valuable, no doubt about that. They provide support, protection and caring plus a sense of belonging. There is no substitute for them and that is so by God's design.
And even beyond that are the benefits of instruction, knowledge and the wisdom that is the result of them when mixed with experience. Solomon agreed when he said, "Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her." (Proverbs 8:10-11)
The desire for money, gold, silver, and jewels leaves us only with the desire for more. There is an insatiable aspect of having such things. The more we have, the more we seek to protect it, and the more we need to do that.
But think of knowledge and instruction. They bring us opportunities and provide ongoing satisfaction. We can rest is what we know and we can learn more through instruction. These are not static gifts; they are multipliers for our life. Their benefit is wisdom and that can protect and provide for us.
Keeping our eye on the truly precious things in life helps us to stay centered and gives us the ability to do right when we are tempted to do wrong. How are you gaining knowledge and instruction today?
