Give Thanks

How often do you take time to give God thanks? How big does something have to be to give thanks for it? We thank God when we pray at the beginning of a meal but we can thank Him in many other times. The sacrificial system created for the Jewish people at the beginning of the wilderness wanderings included many offerings like the burnt offering, meal, sin, trespass, wave and peace offering. Within the peace offering were three specific offerings: thank, vow and free will. The thank offering was a proclamation of a meaningful relationship with God. It was an occasion of great joy expressing the gratitude of the giver in response to an unsolicited special blessing of God. The psalmist said, "He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me [God], and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God." Wealth

This is a problem. Everyone wants wealth and seeks it by evil means or by diligent effort. Lying and cheating to get it destroys our soul and the souls of many others, for there are always those who would cozy up to us when we have wealth. Such was the life of the young prodigal who asked his father for his inheritance. Then, when he had received it, he went off and spent it all with many friends until it was gone. Then he was alone, hungry and without comfort. But the problem is when we obtain wealth through our diligence and ignore God's hand in this gift. We are proud, maybe even boastful, about what we have obtained and the wisdom we used to obtain it. This is a dangerous place because we set ourselves apart from God as the source. Solomon recognized this problem and said, "The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it." (Proverbs 10:22) The blessing of God must be linked to any wealth we have.
