The Path of Life – Life Series #4
This is a descriptive term for the right road to walk. It is referred to twice as the "path of life." In Psalm 16:11 it says, "You have made known to me the path of life," and in Proverbs 15:24 it says, "The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave." In other words the path of life is knowable and being on it may extend your life.
Job with his limited understanding of God's direction in his life when concerned that he might leave the path said, "if my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has been led by my eyes, or if my hands have been defiled, then others may eat what I have sown and may my crops be uprooted." (Job 31:7)
The psalmist said, "You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn." (Psalm 18:36) God makes the path smooth and broad for those who walk upright, even though it is identified in the New Testament as the "narrow." (Matthew 7:14) Isaiah also described the path when he said, "the path of the righteous is level;…you make the way of the righteous smooth." (Isaiah 26:7) God also promised this to Jeremiah when he said, "I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble." (Jeremiah 31:9)
The path is referred to as "straight." (Psalm 27:11) Staying on the path does not always mean times will be good. The psalmist said rough times could come upon us "though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant, our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path." (Psalm 44:17-19)
God's commands are important when on the path of life. The psalmist said, "I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free." (Psalm 119:32) Delight is also found "in the path of your commands." (119:35) God's Word "is a light for my path" which is the right path. (Psalm 119:105)
Solomon noted that "the path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day." (Proverbs 4:18) He also noted that "in the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality." The path of life leads to eternal life. And, Solomon encouraged us to "listen..and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path." (Proverbs 23:19) He knew there was a "right path" and what was important to walk on it.
Zechariah's prophecy in his song at the birth of John the Baptist, his son, prophesied that Jesus Christ would be the one "to guide our feet into the path of peace." (Luke 1:79)So, the path of life is knowable, leads upward, is broad, smooth, level, straight, does not eliminate all problems, brings delight and is a place where God's commands are kept, keeps getting brighter and leads to immortality. Sounds like a good path to be on!
