Solomon and Jesus Christ - Greater Than Series #1

The song by Brian Johnson, We Will Not Be Shaken, says in its last lines these words, "All those against Him will fall, for our God is stronger, we can do all things. No higher name we can call, for Jesus is greater, we can do all things." (Listen to it at Youtube.com searching under its title.) This is the theme for our new Greater Than Series which looks at Jesus Christ and compares him with several Bible characters. Superlatives such as “superior,” “greater,” “better,” are used to make the comparison. He is declared as greater than them for many different reasons. Reasons that should help us trust in Him. Today we see that Jesus is greater than Solomon. "The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here." (Luke 11:31) Solomon was the second son of Bathsheba and King David. He was especially loved an…

Today's Special

Birthdays and anniversaries are special days. They announce the progress of a person or couple in their trek through life. Today is special because it is the 1,000th blog of Today's Word. I was not aiming at this date but it did come through many hours of reading God's Word and sharing insights from it. The blog began on April 28, 2012 and through the next four years and several months I have shared theology, the stories of Biblical characters, several series on specific themes, writings on character areas, and much about nature. Along the way I have revealed stories of my own life, too. It all began as I searched for a way to impart spiritual wisdom, encouragement, and biblical knowledge to my adult children and their spouses. It came with the purpose as stated in the blog, "Daily wisdom for the rushed life." That original goal for my children has been expanded as more than 80 other people now receive it. I have some friends, Steve and Becky Lyles, from decade's …

Faith-Based Life

I send out a newsletter to my real estate family monthly and Monday I delivered it to the post office. I usually go to the side door at the post office, ring the bell and when a person opens it I deliver to them the box of readied newsletters. But after ringing several times, no one came and that made me frustrated.  So, I went inside and stood in line for 15 minutes waiting to drop them off to an agent at the counter. I struck up a conversation with a man in front of me and we discussed his big box, a return to sender thing. As we talked, he eyed my Real Estate badge and then asked if I was a realtor. I said yes and he asked for a card and said he and his wife were just talking about selling their present home and buying another. "Okay God," I said as I walk away. I get it. You didn't want me at the side door today because you wanted me to talk to that man. I know that God is working alongside me in my business. I am excited that it really is a faith-based business. …

Rulers and God

Rome had existed as a Republic for hundreds of years until it sank into a dictatorship. The first emperor was Augustus who was the one who declared a tax and census should be gathered throughout the Empire. (Luke 2:1) This was the reason for the travel of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem to pay it and this is where Mary gave birth to Jesus, as prophesied. The second dictator was Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus who was the reluctantly adopted step-son of Augustus. His mother divorced so that she could marry Augustus when Tiberius was four years old. The Senate confirmed Tiberius after Augustus' death in 14 A.D. According to Scripture, John the Baptist's ministry began in the fifteenth year of Tiberius' reign or A.D. 29. (Luke 3:1) Tiberius appointed Pontius Pilate to be governor of Judea about 26-37 A.D. His responsibility was to collect the tribute and taxes necessary to run the local government and enlarge the coffers of Rome. Pilate was known to be naturally inflexible, a bl…
