Integrity 4

Last month we spent three Today's Words talking about integrity. This is an essential for a life that stands before the Lord. King David found out what it meant to have integrity and in his life we only see one time that he ignored it, the story of Bathsheba and Uriah. He had some good words for us in Psalm 26 about integrity. "I have acted with integrity,….I live with integrity" (Psalm 26:1-2, 11)  What would it mean to act and live with integrity? David explains with these other statements: "I have trusted in the Lord without wavering…test my motives and my heart…I am always aware of your love…I have lived according to your truth…" And then summarizing several verses David says, "I am careful in my associations…worship God…free of schemes and bribes." The challenge for us is trusting the Lord "without wavering" and that is hard. Unbelief slips into the corners of our mind and causes us to waver. Trusting God is placing your full faith in Him…

Eyes

Can you imagine the thoughts of Peter while he stood in the boat and watched the Sea of Galilee churn all around him. He and the other eleven were making the seven-mile crossing of the Sea after dark. It should have been a beautiful trip with no pressure but, as often happened on that lake, the waters got really rough and their lives were at risk. Nine hours had passed since their trip started and they were still just in the midst of the Sea, struggling at their oars and full of fear. Then, around 3am, Jesus came walking on the Sea and his suggested route seemed to pass by the boat but not encounter it. However, as he got close enough for them to see his outline and then recognize him as Jesus, Peter yelled to him, "Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you walking on the water." (Matthew 14:28)  Jesus said, "Yes, come." So, impetuous Peter stepped over the side of the boat and onto the water. What do you think was going through this simple fisherman's…

Action and Attitude

Of what does the Kingdom of God exist? This seems to be a question that books could be written about but it is easily answered by Paul as he wrote to the church at Rome. There had been some that wanted to cling to the externals in religious worship, like not eating certain foods or only worshiping on certain days as the actions necessary in the Kingdom of God. But Paul explained that the Kingdom of God consisted of other than these external and minor things. He said, "The Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17) These deal more with your attitudes than your behaviors. "Goodness" in some translations is "righteousness" in others. This is not the righteousness we receive from Christ in salvation but right living directed by the Holy Spirit. It is attitude of conforming your life to Christ's and living it as Christ would live it. It removes us from hurtin…

Integrity 3 - Accountability Partner

A balanced life needs to have accountability. When I was called as the Singles Pastor to Village Church in Beaverton Oregon, after about two weeks on the job the Senior Pastor, Don Jensen, called me into his office and challenged me to find an accountability partner. Seriously but sad, I was forty-one years old and had never been challenged in this way. I ask him what it was and he explained it like I have below. I went about the task of finding another man that I could meet with on a regular basis and gave to him a list of questions I was giving him permission to ask me every meeting. The time I spent with him over a meal and discussing my life became very important to me. I have sought to have an accountability partner in my life from then on. Here is what is necessary in this friendship. An accountability partner is a person to whom you can entrust with the intimate details of your life. It is essential for every person. An accountability partner is an individual of your own choosing …
